Ghafir 40:51
“Indeed, We will support Our messengers and those who believe during the life of this world and on the Day when the witnesses will stand -”
Saheeh International
Essence
Allah binds Himself with a double promise: He will help His messengers and the believers, in this life and on the Day the witnesses stand.
A reflection
We, and only We, give the help
Innā la-nanṣuru rusulanā. Truly, We will surely help Our messengers.
The sentence is built with two locks on it. Inna, truly. Then la, surely, fixed to the verb itself. In Arabic this is the voice of a promise that cannot be broken. And the speaker is Allah, using the We of majesty.
One later commentary notes how the ayah is set. It is a fresh statement, made by Allah Himself, after the long scene in the Fire. What happened to Pharaoh's people, it says, is one branch of a general rule that wisdom requires. It is Our constant way that We help Our messengers and those who follow them.
The root of naṣr, n-ṣ-r, carries a lovely picture in the lexicons. Rain arriving on dry land. Good that comes to you from outside, help that stands with you against what overpowers you. The rain does not come from the ground. It comes down to it.
That is exactly where the ego needs to be put back in its place. When believers win an argument, a cause or a struggle, the temptation is to think it was their cleverness. A small residents' group wins a long case to save a playing field from developers. At the celebration, their spokesman's speech is entirely about his own tactics. Everyone claps. Nobody mentions that the developer's funding simply collapsed a week before the hearing.
The ayah does not say: My messengers will win. It says: We will help them. The victory is a gift, falling like rain.
A doubt follows naturally. Does Allah need His messengers to win, as a king needs his armies? The answer is in the verb. He is the one giving the help, not receiving it. His cause does not depend on us. We depend on His help. Pride in our victories is like dry ground boasting of the rain.
