“Say, "Yes, and you will be [rendered] contemptible."”
Saheeh International
Essence
To two ayat of scornful objection the answer is one word, yes, and the proud who asked will stand made small.
A reflection
The minutes on the screen
Picture a board meeting years ago. A junior engineer raises a safety concern. The chairman laughs, makes a joke about 'nervous types', and moves to the next item. The room laughs with him. Years later, after the accident, there is a public inquiry. The chairman sits at a small table facing the panel. On the large screen behind him, someone has put up the minutes of that meeting. He reads his own joke, in his own words, in front of everyone.
That is something like wa-antum dākhirūn. The deniers had mocked, called the signs magic, and asked with a sneer whether they and their fathers would really rise. The answer: yes. And you will be dākhirūn. The commentators gloss it as utterly humbled, made small beneath His great power. One early lexicographer called dukhūr the most extreme kind of abasement.
One commentator explains why. When they see happening the very thing they denied, there is no way they will not be humbled. Another reading: the Hour will come whether you like it or not; it happens despite you.
Someone may ask: does God take pleasure in humiliating people? Isn't this the cruelty of a proud ruler? The humiliation here is not inflicted for His satisfaction. He is free of all need (35:15). It is what pride looks like when it meets reality. The chairman was not humiliated by the inquiry. He was humiliated by his own words, played back.
The ego always assumes the meeting will never be reviewed. This ayah says the minutes are kept, and the Day of review is certain. Better to be humbled now, by choice, than then, by the truth.
