As-Saffat 37:77

وَجَعَلْنَا ذُرِّيَّتَهُۥ هُمُ ٱلْبَاقِينَ

“And We made his descendants those remaining [on the earth]”

Saheeh International

Essence

When the flood had passed, the mocking crowd left no line at all, and Allah made one believing family the ones who remained.

A reflection

He decides whose line goes on

Wa-jaʿalnā dhurriyyatahu hum al-bāqīn: and We made his descendants the ones who remained. The sentence is built to exclude. One classical commentary notes the restricting form: they were the remaining ones, which shows that everyone else had passed away.

Human beings spend enormous effort on remaining. Family names carved over doorways. Portraits in the hall. Businesses named 'and Sons'. We plan our continuity as though it were ours to plan.

Picture a great country house with a family tree painted across one wall of the hall. Twelve generations of names in gold leaf, branching proudly. Visitors are shown it first. Two generations later the last heir, with no children and heavy debts, sells the house to a hotel chain. The mural stays. Guests photograph it on their way to the spa. Nobody in the building carries any of those names.

The ayah says who actually decides which lines go on. Not the family with the grandest mural. Not the most numerous tribe. In Nuh's time his people were many and confident, and he was mocked and nearly alone. Yet jaʿalnā: We made. One man's descendants became the ones who remained, and the crowd that laughed left no line at all.

This is humbling for the ego that thinks in dynasties. Your name, your children and your institutions continue only as long as He makes them continue. The pride of 'my legacy' sits on borrowed ground.

Is that a boast of raw power? Not in the way human boasts work. Allah gains nothing by our continuing or ending. The point is turned towards us: stop trying to secure your remaining by your own grip. The ones who remained were the ones who obeyed. Remaining is His gift to the faithful, not a monument the proud can build.
