As-Saffat 37:8

لَّا يَسَّمَّعُونَ إِلَى ٱلْمَلَإِ ٱلْأَعْلَىٰ وَيُقْذَفُونَ مِن كُلِّ جَانِبٍ

“[So] they may not listen to the exalted assembly [of angels] and are pelted from every side,[1288]”

Saheeh International

Essence

The devils strain to overhear the Highest Assembly and cannot; they are pelted from every side they try.

A reflection

The room you will never talk your way into

A delegate arrives at a big industry conference with one goal: get into the VIP lounge. He hovers by the rope. He chats to the woman with the clipboard. He tries the side door. By the end of the second day he has not heard a single speaker. He spent the whole event straining at a room that was never his.

Al-malaʾ al-aʿlā, the Highest Assembly, is the angels in the heavens. The lexicons explain malaʾ: a gathering agreed on one view, who fill the eyes with their splendour and the soul with awe. A vessel filled to the brim is the root's picture. Some commentators add that it means the noblest of the angels, or their scribes.

The devils, for all their cunning, cannot get near. One commentator notes that the angels there speak of what Allah reveals of His law and His decree. The devils press towards it and cannot even catch the words.

That is humbling for anyone who loves being 'in the room'. We crave access. We want to know what is said behind closed doors, especially about us. But there is an assembly above every boardroom, and no networking reaches it.

Someone may ask: why does God keep these things hidden? Is He guarding His secrets jealously, as a proud king would? A proud king hides things to keep power. Allah needs nothing (35:15). What He guards here is the truth itself, so that it reaches us whole through His messengers, not in scraps mixed with lies. The closed door is a mercy to those outside it.

The ego wants every door opened. Wisdom accepts that some rooms are His alone, and listens to the speaker in front of it.
