Sad 38:21

۞ وَهَلْ أَتَىٰكَ نَبَؤُا۟ ٱلْخَصْمِ إِذْ تَسَوَّرُوا۟ ٱلْمِحْرَابَ

“And has there come to you the news of the adversaries, when they climbed over the wall of [his] prayer chamber -”

Saheeh International

Essence

The story opens with a question that makes you lean in: disputants coming over the wall, into the one room a praying king had closed.

A reflection

A story sent to a man who was being mocked

Wa hal atāka: has the news reached you? The Quran opens stories this way when it wants the listener to lean in. The question is not a request for information. It is a hand on the shoulder: stop, this is worth hearing.

Look at who is being addressed, and when. A few ayat earlier, the Prophet ﷺ is told to be patient with what they say, and to remember Our servant Dāwūd (38:17). In Makkah he was being called a sorcerer and a liar (38:4). His enemies mocked the Judgement itself: hurry our share to us before the Day of Reckoning (38:16).

So the story that follows is medicine for a particular wound. One classical reading of the passage draws the link directly. Dāwūd was a king with strength, mountains that glorified with him and a kingdom made firm. If anyone could have been spared trouble, it was him. Yet even his locked room was entered. Even he was tested, and even he turned back to his Lord.

The lesson for the Prophet ﷺ is not that life will become easy. It is that the best of those before him were tested too, and the test was the road to nearness (38:25).

Think of a trainee hairdresser whose first client walks out in tears over a fringe. The salon owner does not hand her a leaflet on confidence. She locks the door at closing time, puts the kettle on and says, 'Sit down. Let me tell you about the bride I nearly ruined.' A story does what advice cannot. It says you are not the first, and you are not alone.

That is how this passage reaches you too. Whatever is being said about you, whatever room of yours has been broken into, the question still comes: has the news reached you? Listen. Someone greater went through it, and came out nearer.
