Sad 38:4
“And they wonder that there has come to them a warner [i.e., Prophet Muḥammad (ﷺ)] from among themselves. And the disbelievers say, "This is a magician and a liar.”

Essence
They marvelled that the warner was one of their own, the very thing that made him trustworthy, and called that truthful man a lying sorcerer.
A reflection
Why a man, and not an angel?
The wonder in this ayah is specific: an jāʾahum mundhirun minhum, that a warner came to them from among themselves. Another surah puts the same complaint as a question. 'Is it a wonder to people that We inspired a man from among them?' (10:2). The commentators explain the expectation behind it. If God had something to say, they assumed, He would send an angel down from the sky.
The objection sounds reasonable, and many still hold it. Would an angel not have been more convincing? Surely a blaze of light would settle the matter once and for all.
The Quran answers it directly elsewhere. 'Had We made him an angel, We would have made him a man' (6:9). An angel among humans would have to take human form to be met at all, and the same doubts would return. And 'had there been angels walking the earth in peace, We would have sent them an angel from heaven as a messenger' (17:95). A messenger is matched to those he is sent to.
There is a deeper reason. A message about how to live needs to be lived. An angel cannot show you how to forgive a cousin, fast through a long summer day, or keep going after grief. A man can.
Think of a woman learning sign language at evening classes. In one term she has two tutors. The first is a hearing teacher, excellent with the textbook. The second is Deaf, signs fast, laughs easily and lives every day in the language she teaches. It is in the second tutor's class that the students start to sign without thinking.
The Makkans' wonder had a hidden sting. A warner from among them could be watched. His meals, his debts, his marriage and his sorrows were all in plain view. A heavenly messenger asks only to be believed. A human one asks to be followed.
That may be the real objection. It is easier to admire an angel than to be asked to live like a man you know.
