Sad 38:20
وَشَدَدْنَا مُلْكَهُۥ وَءَاتَيْنَـٰهُ ٱلْحِكْمَةَ وَفَصْلَ ٱلْخِطَابِ
“And We strengthened his kingdom and gave him wisdom and discernment in speech.”
Saheeh International
Essence
Allah tied Dawud's kingdom firm, then gave him the wisdom that reins power in and speech that parts truth from falsehood at the joint.
A reflection
A knot you did not tie
Wa-shadadnā mulkahū: and We made his kingdom firm. The root of shadadnā begins with a simple picture: a knot pulled hard. Strength in a thing, first of all in a rope. Elsewhere Allah promises Musa: 'We will strengthen your arm through your brother' (28:35). Same verb, same picture: a binding that holds.
The commentators asked how Dawud's kingdom was strengthened. Some reports speak of guards in their thousands around his prayer chamber each night. Others say awe of him settled in people's hearts. One commentator takes the guard numbers as far-fetched, and as something a man like Dawud would not need. Another gives a careful answer. Allah said He strengthened it, and did not say how. No sound report settles the matter, so the words should stay as wide as He left them.
What the ayah does say is who tied the knot: We. One commentary records the view that it was divine support and victory, with a line of verse. A great army packed close avails nothing to one who is not helped and supported.
Picture a young father loading a roof box for the family's first long holiday. He packs it carefully and pulls every strap tight, pleased with himself. At the motorway services his own father admits, a little sheepishly, that he went out at six that morning and re-tied every strap. The load held all the way. The young man never knew whose knots were holding it.
That is the humbling in this ayah. A king's strength was a knot someone else tied. So is ours: a career, a household, a reputation, a body that works. The ego wants to believe it pulled the straps tight. The ayah says: We made it firm.
Is it vanity for Allah to keep saying 'We strengthened', 'We gave'? Vanity is a creature claiming credit it has not earned, for applause it needs. Allah needs none of it. He tells us whose knots hold our lives, so that we stop trusting our own.
