Sad 38:23

“Indeed this, my brother, has ninety-nine ewes, and I have one ewe; so he said, 'Entrust her to me,' and he overpowered me in speech."”

Saheeh International

Essence

One man's single ewe against his brother's ninety-nine, a demand dressed up as care, and an argument won by the stronger tongue.

A reflection

Ninety-nine, and still asking

The numbers are the first blow. He has ninety-nine ewes. I have one. The parable is built so that nobody needs a lawyer to see the wrong.

Some reports in the commentaries give the richer man a motive: he wanted to make his flock up to a round hundred. Whether or not that detail is reliable, it captures something true about appetite. The one with ninety-nine is not hungry. He is unfinished. The gap between ninety-nine and a hundred can feel larger to him than the gap between nothing and one.

This is the strange arithmetic of wanting. Having more does not quiet the itch; it often sharpens it. His request has nothing to do with need. It is about completion: the tidy number, the collection without a hole in it.

A garden-centre chain owns every nursery in a county except one. The last is a family plot on the ring road, run by a widow and her son, with the glasshouse her husband built by hand. The chain does not need the land. It offers twice its value, then three times. Then a letter arrives about 'questions over the access road'. To the chain it is one missing pin on a map. To the family it is everything they have left.

The Quran does not lecture about greed here. It simply shows it, and lets the listener's outrage do the teaching. You do not need to be told that the man with ninety-nine is in the wrong.

The harder question is the mirror. Where am I the one with ninety-nine? Where does my wish for completion press on someone else's one? A full diary that claims a colleague's only free afternoon. A large family that expects the relative with a small flat to host every gathering. The parable asks you to find your own ninety-nine before you condemn his.
