Sad 38:42

ٱرْكُضْ بِرِجْلِكَ ۖ هَـٰذَا مُغْتَسَلٌۢ بَارِدٌ وَشَرَابٌ

“[So he was told], "Strike [the ground] with your foot; this is a [spring for a] cool bath and drink."”

Saheeh International

Essence

To a man worn through by illness, the answer was one command, strike the ground, and the water was already there.

A reflection

The answer was an instruction

Most people carry this ayah as a picture of rescue. A sick man lies still, and healing pours down on him from outside. Patience, in that picture, means waiting until Allah fixes it.

Look at the first word. Urkuḍ is an order. The answer to Ayyub's call does not begin with 'We healed him'. It begins with something for him to do. Strike the ground with your foot.

In al-Anbiya the same moment is told from above: We answered him, and removed the harm (21:84). Here it is told from the ground, as an instruction to a man who must act. Both are true. Allah did the healing. He also asked a worn-out servant for one movement first.

Notice how small the movement is. Not a journey, not a search, not a task beyond him. One stamp of one foot. The commentaries add only that he was told to rise from where he lay. Then the spring came up where the foot landed, and the healing came through water he could never have found.

On a surgical ward there is a morning when the nurse asks a man who has lain three weeks in bed to do one thing. Swing his legs over the side and press both feet onto the cold floor. That is all. Everything after depends on it, and it is almost nothing.

Patience in this ayah is not lying still until rescue arrives. It is staying turned towards Allah, so that when He asks for the one small thing, you are ready to do it. The size of what follows is His.
