Sad 38:77

قَالَ فَٱخْرُجْ مِنْهَا فَإِنَّكَ رَجِيمٌ

“[Allāh] said, "Then get out of it [i.e., Paradise], for indeed, you are expelled.”

Saheeh International

Essence

Iblīs claimed height, and two words answered him, sending the one who would not go down out of the Garden, pelted and driven off.

A reflection

Two words, and the high one is gone

Overnight, a storm tide lifts a superyacht from its berth and sets it down across a harbour car park. In the morning, people photograph it lying on its side between two delivery vans. Its owner's name is still painted in gold on the stern. The sea did not read it.

Qāla fa-khruj minhā: He said, then get out of it. Iblīs had built a case: fire against clay, rank against command. Allah did not debate it. One commentary observes that the error was so plain that no refutation was given. The reply was his expulsion. Two words, and the creature who claimed to be among the high was outside.

The ego is always building cases for its own height. This ayah shows how much those cases weigh against a single word from Allah: nothing. Every position we hold, every standing we enjoy, every private 'I am better', lasts only as long as He permits. Undoing it costs Him no effort at all.

A classical commentator on the parallel passage adds the sharpest detail. Iblīs was dealt with by the opposite of his aim. He wanted greatness and was made small: get out, you are among the humbled (7:13). Sahih Muslim records the other side of that law. No one humbles himself for Allah except that Allah raises him.

A sceptic might ask whether this is a king's wounded pride, expelling a critic for one hard sentence. But look at what Allah lost through the refusal: nothing. He is the Free of need (35:15). The same commentator calls the command to leave one of decree, which nothing can resist. It did not express a temper. It placed Iblīs where his pride had already taken him, outside the company of the humble.

So the next time you feel your own importance rising, picture the yacht in the car park. Then choose the other law instead. Go down willingly, and leave the lifting to Allah.
