Sad 38:83

إِلَّا عِبَادَكَ مِنْهُمُ ٱلْمُخْلَصِينَ

“Except, among them, Your chosen servants."”

Saheeh International

Essence

Iblīs's vow to mislead everyone carries one exception he cannot cross: Allah's own servants, whom He has purified for Himself.

A reflection

Aimed at, but not reached

An operating theatre is not a room that germs never reach. They arrive with every door that opens and every person who walks in. What makes it safe is that the air is filtered and changed again and again. What arrives is cleared before it can settle.

It is easy to read this ayah as a promise that the purified are never tested. One classical commentary rules that out with care. Iblīs did not say 'I will not try the righteous'. He said 'I will mislead them all', and then made his exception. He still aims at the purified. He simply does not succeed with them.

The commentary tests this against another ayah. Whenever a messenger or prophet recited, Satan cast something into it. Then Allah removed what Satan cast and made His verses firm (22:52). So even the prophets were approached. What marks them is not that the enemy stayed away. It is that what he threw in did not remain.

That is exactly the picture inside the word mukhlaṣ. The lexicons describe the root as purifying: taking out what was mixed in. The Bedouin made clarified butter by cooking it until the dregs sank and the clear fat rose. Gold cleared of dross by fire was given a word from the same root. This is established in the lexicons. Ikhlāṣ is not a sealed room. It is a continual clearing.

That should change what we expect of sincere faith. Feeling the pull does not mean you are outside the exception. Feeling a doubt arrive does not mean you have been taken. The question is what happens next: whether it settles, or whether it is cleared.

One way to keep the clearing working is simple and old: notice quickly, and turn quickly. A dreg left overnight is harder to lift than one caught as it falls.

The purified servant is the one in whom the clearing keeps working. Allah keeps clearing, and the servant keeps turning back to Him.
