Al-Hajj 22:52

“And We did not send before you any messenger or prophet except that when he spoke [or recited], Satan threw into it [some misunderstanding]. But Allāh abolishes that which Satan throws in; then Allāh makes precise His verses.[933] And Allāh is Knowing and Wise.”

Essence

Every prophet who recited or hoped met Satan's interference; each time Allah removed what was thrown in and set His signs firm.

A reflection

Three times the name, and never the prophet's

Read the second half of the ayah slowly and count who acts. Fa-yansakhu Allāhu: then Allah abolishes. Thumma yuḥkimu Allāhu āyātih: then Allah makes His signs firm. Wa-Allāhu ʿalīmun ḥakīm: and Allah is Knowing, Wise. The name is stated three times in one breath, where a pronoun would have done. One classical commentator notes that the explicit name underlines that the act is His alone.

The prophets are the subject of the first half. They were sent, they recited, they hoped. Satan is the subject of the casting. But the removing and the firming belong to Allah and to no one else. Not even to a messenger.

Picture a restorer on a scaffold in an old cathedral. Someone has sprayed graffiti across a medieval wall painting. Over weeks she lifts the paint away with solvents and swabs. Beneath it the original colours return, brighter than anyone remembered. Yet she did not paint the original. She can only uncover. In this ayah, the One who removes is the One who first made. Nothing of His is lost under the spray.

This should humble a particular kind of pride: that of the anxious defender of truth. Some of us behave as if Islam's survival depends on our winning every online exchange. We grow sharp and sleepless, sure that the message will fall if we stop arguing. The ayah lifts that weight and that vanity together. The message was never in your keeping. Even prophets did not guard it by their own strength.

Does a God who keeps naming Himself as the one who acts want credit? The opposite. He needs nothing from anyone. The naming is for us. A frightened believer needs to know who is guarding the text. An arrogant believer needs to know it is not him.

Do your part: recite, teach, explain with patience. Then rest. The firming is Allah's work, and He is Knowing, Wise.
