Az-Zumar 39:16

“They will have canopies [i.e., layers] of fire above them and below them, canopies. By that Allāh threatens [i.e., warns] His servants. O My servants, then fear Me.”

Saheeh International

Essence

Fire above them and fire below: Allah describes it so that His servants never reach it, then calls them tenderly to be mindful of Him.

A reflection

A warning that exists to go unused

Descriptions of Hell disturb many modern readers. A God who needs nothing, and who is free of rage and revenge, surrounding people with fire: how can that be just, or even fitting?

One commentary raises almost exactly this question. Allah is free of need of all creation, beyond desire, vengeance and any urge to harm. How then can He punish these poor creatures so severely? It records one answer: the purpose of the punishment is to deter, and a deterrent must be real to work. Then it prefers another reading, drawn from the ayah's own words. That is what Allah warns His servants with. The description is given so that those who hear it will fear. Then they turn, and purify their worship. The next words confirm it: O My servants, be mindful of Me.

The ayah, in other words, explains its own purpose. The picture of the fire is not the end of the story; it is a warning placed early on the road. A warning succeeds when nobody has to experience what it describes.

Picture the boxes of cigarettes in some countries, printed with stark photographs of damaged lungs and rotting teeth. Smokers complain they are horrible. That is the point. The images are horrible so that fewer people end up looking like them.

The Quran never pretends Hell is pleasant or small. That honesty is part of its justice. A Lord who knew the danger and hid it would be the unjust one. What remains open for the reader is how to receive it. As a threat from someone hostile? Or as a warning from Someone who, in the very next breath, calls you 'My servants'?
