Az-Zumar 39:20

“But those who have feared their Lord - for them are chambers,[1347] above them chambers built high, beneath which rivers flow. [This is] the promise of Allāh. Allāh does not fail in [His] promise.”

Saheeh International

Essence

Against canopies of fire, Allah sets chambers built one above another, rivers beneath, for those mindful of their Lord, and He keeps His promise.

A reflection

Not only for prophets

But those who were mindful of their Lord, for them are high chambers. A reader might assume such places are for the famous saints and prophets, not for ordinary people with ordinary lives.

The Companions assumed the same thing, and the Prophet ﷺ corrected them. Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim record his words. The people of Paradise will look up at the people of the chambers above them. They will see them as you see a brilliant star low on the horizon, east or west, because of the difference in rank between them. They said: Messenger of Allah, those are the dwellings of the prophets that no one else will reach. He said: no, by the One in whose hand is my soul. They are men who believed in Allah and believed the messengers.

That answer changes how the ayah sounds. The chambers are not reserved for an elite. They are for those who were mindful of their Lord: who believed, and lived as if they believed.

Picture a woman who has cleaned offices at night for twenty years. She prays in a storeroom between floors. She has never been thanked by name by anyone in the building. She is not famous, not learned, not consulted. By the hadith's measure, she may be looking down one day at a sky full of people who once walked past her mop.

Allah needs none of our mindfulness. It is for us. Many people feel their faith is too ordinary to matter: no great knowledge, no great deeds. The ayah says the high rooms were built for people who believed and were careful with their Lord. That description has room for you.
