Az-Zumar 39:19
أَفَمَنْ حَقَّ عَلَيْهِ كَلِمَةُ ٱلْعَذَابِ أَفَأَنتَ تُنقِذُ مَن فِى ٱلنَّارِ
“Then, is one who has deserved the decree of punishment [to be guided]? Then, can you save one who is in the Fire?”
Saheeh International
Essence
Can you rescue someone already in the Fire, the Messenger is asked, and gently told that guidance is not in his hands however hard he pulls.
A reflection
Pulling people back from the flame
Will you rescue one who is in the Fire? The question is addressed to the Prophet ﷺ, and one commentary explains the picture behind it. His intense effort to guide people is likened to a man trying to pull people out of a fire. Their state of deserving punishment, while still alive, is treated as if they were already inside it.
The Prophet ﷺ used almost the same image himself. Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim record him saying: my example and yours is that of a man who lit a fire. When it lit up what was around it, moths and insects began to fall into it, and he tried to hold them back. I am holding you by your waist-wraps, away from the Fire, and you keep rushing into it.
Put the hadith beside the ayah and a whole inner life opens up. Here is a man holding people back from flames with his own hands, night after night. Some slip through his grip. And the ayah, gently, tells him: you cannot rescue someone who is determined to be in it.
One report names a particular person: Abu Lahab and his son. Abu Lahab was the Prophet's own uncle. The ayah's comfort was not abstract. It concerned a family member whose refusal he had to watch.
Anyone who has tried to save someone they love from self-destruction knows the posture. The ayah does not tell such a person to stop caring. It tells them where their power ends. The pulling is theirs. The rescue belongs to Allah alone.
