An-Nisa 4:48

“Indeed, Allāh does not forgive association with Him, but He forgives what is less than that for whom He wills. And he who associates others with Allāh has certainly fabricated a tremendous sin.”

Essence

One thing, met unrepented, Allah does not forgive: setting partners beside Him; everything less, however vast, lies open to His forgiveness for whom He wills.

A reflection

Only the One wronged by every sin can write them off

The ayah opens with the strongest emphasis Arabic has: inna Allāha, truly Allah. Then it sets two verbs side by side. Lā yaghfiru: He does not forgive. Wa-yaghfiru: and He forgives.

Who has the right to speak this way? Only the One whose right is touched by every wrong. Every sin, whatever else it injures, is a step outside His command. So only He can say which debts stand and which are written off. One classical commentator notes that His name is repeated in the second half, man yushrik bi-Allāh, where a pronoun would have done. The repetition, he says, is meant to fill the listener with awe.

Now look at the size of what He says He forgives. Mā dūna dhālika: all that is less than that. The same commentator glosses it boldly. Sins, he says, even great ones, even as many as the grains of a vast desert of sand, even before repentance, out of His grace.

This is majesty, and it should shrink the ego in a particular way. We struggle to forgive one colleague who took credit for our idea. We keep private lists of who forgot our birthday, who did not visit, who spoke sharply in a meeting. The ego is a stingy creditor. It cannot afford to let anything go, because it feels so small.

Only the truly great can forgive on this scale. Forgiveness is not weakness. It is what overflowing power looks like.

Does the one exception show a God anxious about rivals? He is the Free of need (35:15). Nothing anyone worships beside Him diminishes Him at all. The exception is not about His insecurity. It is about what that choice does to the one who makes it, which the next reflection turns to.

For now, stand under the two verbs. One door that only the servant can close. Everything else left in the hands of a Forgiver whose reach has no edges.
