Az-Zumar 39:66
بَلِ ٱللَّهَ فَٱعْبُدْ وَكُن مِّنَ ٱلشَّـٰكِرِينَ
“Rather, worship [only] Allāh and be among the grateful.”
Saheeh International
Essence
After the refusal comes the alternative: Allah, and Allah alone, worship, and be among those whose lives show the favours they were given.
A reflection
One Master instead of many
Bali Allāha fa-ʿbud: rather, Allah, worship. The name of Allah is placed before the verb. Several commentaries note what that does. It restricts: worship Allah, and no one else. One commentary reads it as the answer to an unspoken condition. If you are going to worship at all, if you are a person of sense, then worship Allah.
One commentary also notes why this matters after the Makkan offer. They never asked the Prophet ﷺ to stop worshipping Allah. They asked him to add their gods. So the reply had to say not just 'worship Allah' but 'Allah alone'. Worship of Allah alongside others, it says, is as good as no worship.
Picture a woman in her thirties who for years arranged her week around several authorities at once. Her mother-in-law's approval. Her manager's moods. Her friends' opinions on social media. Each one pulled her in a different direction, and she felt she was failing all of them. When she began to organise her days around five prayers, something shifted. The other demands did not vanish. But they found their place, beneath the One.
Her mother-in-law noticed it first. She was calmer, kinder and somehow more present, because she was no longer trying to be everything to everyone.
That is what Allāha fa-ʿbud offers: not one more demand on a crowded life, but a single centre that orders all the others.
Allah needs none of our worship. He is free of all need (35:15). It is for us. Many people today are exhausted by serving many masters, none of whom is ever satisfied. Worship of the One is the end of that exhaustion. Hearts find rest in His remembrance (13:28), because there is finally only one gaze to please.
