An-Nisa 4:174

“O mankind, there has come to you a conclusive proof from your Lord, and We have sent down to you a clear light.[237]”

Saheeh International

Essence

To all humanity: a decisive proof has come from your Lord, with a light sent down that is clear and shows the way.

A reflection

Light comes down; it is not made

Wa-anzalnā ilaykum nūran mubīnā: and We have sent down to you a clear light.

Notice the voice. The ayah begins by saying a proof 'has come'. Then it switches to anzalnā, 'We sent down', the plural of majesty. One classical commentator explains the shift. Allah attributes the sending down directly to Himself, to give the light its full honour. He does not even mention the messenger who carried it, out of complete kindness to those addressed.

The root of anzala holds a picture from the desert. A traveller would come down from his mount at a camp and set down his load. He became a guest, and the hosts brought out what they had prepared. So a light 'sent down' is not only something dropped from above. It is a guest arriving to stay.

That is majesty, and it quietly corrects the ego. The ego likes to think it generates its own light. Our opinions feel like our discoveries. Our convictions feel self-made.

Picture a seventeen-year-old posting at two in the morning. 'I've finally worked out the meaning of life.' By breakfast, embarrassed, he has deleted it. Light we make for ourselves rarely survives the morning.

The ayah offers a different source. Real light comes down, from above us, from outside us. We do not author it; we receive it.

Does a God who speaks of 'We' and of His own proofs want to overwhelm us? The ayah answers in two words: min rabbikum, from your Lord. One classical commentator notes the tenderness of the phrase. 'Lord' names the One who nurtures, and 'your' makes it personal. The proof came, he says, for your nurturing and your completion.

So receive before you speak. Open the light that was sent before forming the opinion you were about to post.
