An-Nisa 4:28

يُرِيدُ ٱللَّهُ أَن يُخَفِّفَ عَنكُمْ ۚ وَخُلِقَ ٱلْإِنسَـٰنُ ضَعِيفًا

“And Allāh wants to lighten for you [your difficulties]; and mankind was created weak.”

Saheeh International

Essence

The Almighty chooses to lighten your load, because He measured you and knows you were made weak.

A reflection

The Strong lightening the load of the weak

Yurīdu Allāhu an yukhaffifa ʿankum: Allah wants to lighten your load.

The root kh-f-f is the opposite of weight. The lexicons picture a balance whose pan was light and rose. A tribe was said to khaffū when they packed and left their camp quickly, travelling light.

Now consider who is speaking. The One who holds the heavens without strain could demand anything of His creatures. Human rulers with far less power often pile burdens on those beneath them, simply because they can. The surah has just laid out demanding laws about family and desire. Then the Lawgiver says what He wants: not to load you, but to lighten you.

And the reason is given with disarming honesty: wa-khuliqa al-insānu ḍaʿīfā. Man was created weak.

That may be the ego's least favourite sentence in the Quran. We present ourselves as capable, self-sufficient, in control. We admire strength and hide every sign of strain. The ayah removes the mask in a few words. You were made weak. The pull of desire, the sway of fear and grief, the limits of your will: your Maker knows all of it.

Pride hears this as an insult. Humility hears it as relief. You do not have to pretend before Him. He already knows the weight you can carry, because He measured it.

Does the Almighty need us to acknowledge His gentleness? He is the Free of need (35:15). Our thanks add nothing to Him. But a person who knows his Lord is both mighty and gentle can stop performing strength. He can bring his actual weakness into prayer, not an imagined strength.

Majesty, in this ayah, is not the power to crush. It is the power to carry, and the choice to lighten.
