Ghafir 40:19

يَعْلَمُ خَآئِنَةَ ٱلْأَعْيُنِ وَمَا تُخْفِى ٱلصُّدُورُ

“He knows that which deceives the eyes and what the breasts conceal.”

Six words. Yaʿlamu khāʾinata al-aʿyuni wa-mā tukhfī al-ṣudūr: He knows the betrayal of the eyes, and what the chests conceal.

One classical scholar observed that this ayah joins the two most hidden places in a human being. The glances, and the passing thoughts. Not deeds, not words, but the flicker of the eye and the stirring of the heart before anything is done.

One commentary explains why Allah tells us this. So that people will feel true shyness before Him and be mindful of Him as He deserves. So that they watch themselves as one who knows he is seen. He knows the treacherous eye even when it makes a show of trustworthiness.

This is where human pride is quietly undone. Most of us manage an image. A professional profile with a good photograph. A reputation for being sound and serious. A way of speaking in public that shows only the best of us. We get quite skilled at it.

But nobody's image includes the glance. The half-second look at what should not be looked at. The flash of envy at a friend's good news. The contempt that crosses the mind during a polite conversation. These never reach the profile. They are often hidden even from ourselves.

The ayah says they are fully known.

That does not have to crush us. It can humble us in the right way. The person who knows that every glance is seen stops trying to be impressive and starts trying to be clean. Pride needs an audience that sees only the surface. Before this Knower, there is no surface. There is only who you are when you look.
