Ghafir 40:3
“The forgiver of sin, acceptor of repentance, severe in punishment, owner of abundance. There is no deity except Him; to Him is the destination.”
Saheeh International
Essence
He introduces Himself first as the One who forgives sin and accepts return, and only then as severe in punishment, with generosity close behind.
A reflection
Severity held between two mercies
Read the order of the names slowly. Forgiver of sin. Accepter of return. Severe in punishment. Possessor of ṭawl, favour that stretches long.
One name of severity, set between mercies on either side. The commentaries noticed it. One says the single attribute of punishment is immersed among attributes of mercy. Another says that because severity is preceded by two mercies and followed by a third, the side of mercy weighs heavier.
They connect it to a hadith in both Sahihs. When Allah created creation, He wrote in a book with Him above the Throne: My mercy prevails over My anger. Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim record it. The ayah's shape and the hadith say the same thing.
The last name carries its own picture. The root of ṭawl is length. Its plainest image in the lexicons is a long tether let out for a grazing horse, so it can roam far and still be held. One commentary reads it here as favour that lasts long over the one receiving it.
This order dismantles two kinds of pride at once.
The first belongs to the person who thinks he has nothing much to be forgiven. The ayah opens by naming Allah through what we most need from Him. If He introduces Himself as forgiver of sin, the assumption is that we sin.
The second pride is harder to see. It is the person who says: my sin is too big for this. It sounds humble. It is not. It makes one's own failure greater than His forgiveness, and quietly sets the self at the centre again.
The ayah leaves no room for either. You are not too clean to need Him. You are not too dirty to reach Him. You are a servant, standing before names that were arranged with mercy at both ends.
