Ghafir 40:23
وَلَقَدْ أَرْسَلْنَا مُوسَىٰ بِـَٔايَـٰتِنَا وَسُلْطَـٰنٍ مُّبِينٍ
“And We did certainly send Moses with Our signs and a clear authority[1367]”
Saheeh International
Essence
The surah turns from nations in general to one story in detail: Musa, sent with signs and a clear authority that left no excuse.
A reflection
A story told to a man under siege
Until now the surah has spoken of nations in general: Noah's people, the factions, those who left marks on the earth. Now it narrows to one story, told in detail.
The commentaries agree on why. It is a consolation to the Prophet ﷺ. His own people were calling him a liar. Allah tells him what Musa met, and gives him good news through it. The final outcome and victory belong to the messenger, as they did for Musa.
Think of a young doctor in her first hard year, worn down by a consultant who belittles her daily. One evening an older colleague sits with her and tells her own story: the same treatment, the same doubts, and how it ended. Nothing about the young doctor's situation has changed. But she now knows the shape of the road.
That is what this story did for the Prophet ﷺ and the first Muslims in Makkah. It is still doing it for anyone who stands for the truth against a stronger opponent.
