Ghafir 40:22

“That was because their messengers were coming to them with clear proofs, but they disbelieved, so Allāh seized them. Indeed, He is Powerful and severe in punishment.”

Saheeh International

Essence

Messenger after messenger came with proofs as plain as dawn, they refused, and the Strong, severe in punishment, took them.

A reflection

Strength that nothing can overpower

Innahu qawiyyun shadīdu al-ʿiqāb: truly He is Strong, severe in punishment.

One commentary explains qawiyy in three short clauses. Nothing overpowers Him. Nothing defeats Him. Nothing He wills is beyond Him. Another says He is able to do what He wills with complete ease, and that no punishment counts as punishment beside His.

The previous ayah described nations who were ashadd quwwatan, greater in strength. Now the same root is used of Allah. Their strength was relative: stronger than later peoples. His is absolute.

Human strength is always borrowed and always temporary. A young man trains at the gym every morning. He films his lifts and posts them. His body is his identity: the weight he moves, the size of his arms. Then one morning he bends to pick up a towel and something in his back gives. For six weeks he cannot tie his own shoes. His strength had felt like a possession. It turned out to be a loan with a short notice period.

Nations are the same, only slower. One commentary reads the ayah as a direct warning to the Quraysh: beware of walking their path, or the same swift ruin will walk yours. Armies, economies, technologies: each feels permanent until the day it is not.

The ayah does not mock human strength. It places it. Every strand of power anyone has ever had was given, and remains under the One who is qawiyy in Himself.

The ego confuses being strong with being safe. The ayah separates them. Strength without humility before the Strong is exactly what the previous nations had. It is listed here as the reason they had nothing to stand behind when He took them.
