Ghafir 40:29

“O my people, sovereignty is yours today, [your being] dominant in the land. But who would protect us from the punishment of Allāh if it came to us?" Pharaoh said, "I do not show you except what I see, and I do not guide you except to the way of right conduct."”

Essence

He reminds the powerful that their kingdom has a today, counts himself in its danger, and Pharaoh answers with every autocrat's favourite line.

A reflection

The most reasonable sentence Pharaoh ever said

Most readers picture Pharaoh as a ranting madman, someone no sensible person could have followed. Then they reach his reply in this ayah, and it does not sound mad at all.

I show you only what I see. I guide you only to the right way.

That is the calm voice of conviction. It is how every leader sounds who does not want the discussion to continue. One commentary reads the first half as: I advise you nothing except what I would advise myself. Another notes that he claims his tongue and his heart agree, that he holds nothing back.

The commentaries are blunt about what was underneath. He lied. He knew Musa was truthful. Elsewhere the Quran says of his court that they denied the signs while their own souls were certain of them (27:14). Another reading adds a sharper detail. He was afraid. He was putting on a show of firmness. Had he not been frightened, he would not have needed to consult anyone at all.

Here is the doubt a modern reader might raise. Isn't every leader only able to act on what he sees? Pharaoh sounds honest. The answer is in the previous ayah. Clear proofs had been put in front of him. Seeing only what you see is honest. Refusing to look at what you have been shown is not.

A father will not discuss his daughter's choice of degree. I'm only telling you what I know is best for you, he says, and leaves the room. He may even believe it. That is what makes the sentence so hard to argue with, and so dangerous.
