Ghafir 40:33
“The Day you will turn your backs fleeing; there is not for you from Allāh any protector. And whoever Allāh sends astray - there is not for him any guide.”
Saheeh International
Essence
On that Day backs turn to flee and no hand holds fast, and the only guide is the One whose guidance was refused.
A reflection
If Allah leaves someone astray, what choice did they have?
This ayah ends with a sentence that troubles many readers. Whoever Allah leaves astray, there is no guide for him. Taken alone, it can sound like a verdict passed in advance: some people are simply sent the wrong way, and then punished for going.
The objection is serious, and the passage answers it from inside itself. The very next ayah ends: thus Allah leaves astray whoever is a musrif, a transgressor, and a murtāb, a persistent doubter (40:34). The ayah after that describes who these are: people who argue against Allah's signs without any authority, and whose hearts are arrogant (40:35). The leaving astray is described as falling on people already marked by what they chose to do.
One classical commentary records an early theologian drawing exactly that conclusion. Allah gave the reason for their being left astray: they were wasteful and doubting. The commentators of other schools read the same sentences differently in the fine detail. The disagreement over how Allah's will and human choice meet is old, and this ayah does not settle it. What it does make plain is the order of events in this story.
A counsellor at a school has spent a term offering a boy every kind of support. He refuses all of it, mocks it, and finally leaves. She says afterwards that she could open every door but one. She could not make him walk through.
What remains open is the deep question of how divine will and human freedom fit together. What is not open is that, in this passage, no one is left astray who had not first turned from a clear sign.
