Ghafir 40:59

إِنَّ ٱلسَّاعَةَ لَـَٔاتِيَةٌ لَّا رَيْبَ فِيهَا وَلَـٰكِنَّ أَكْثَرَ ٱلنَّاسِ لَا يُؤْمِنُونَ

“Indeed, the Hour is coming - no doubt about it - but most of the people do not believe.”

Saheeh International

Essence

The Hour is certainly coming, with no room for unsettling doubt, yet most people neither believe in it nor prepare for it.

A reflection

A long night, then one moment

Inna al-sāʿata la-ātiyatun. The Hour is surely coming.

The word sāʿa, hour, has a haunting picture in the lexicons. A stretch of night slipping quietly by while people sleep. And then the Hour: a brief moment in which something vast arrives without warning. The lexicons also give it the sense of now, this very moment. This is established.

So the name itself carries a warning. The Hour is not a long era to be planned for at leisure. It is a single moment at the end of a long, quiet night. Most of the time leading up to it feels like nothing is happening.

The verb adds its own image. Ātiya, coming, from ʾ-t-y. The lexicons picture water running easily down its channel to the pool. Coming, especially with ease. Water does not argue with the slope. It simply arrives where the channel leads.

And the sentence is locked twice: inna, truly, and la, surely. One narration-based commentary paraphrases it as a direct appeal. The Hour in which Allah revives the dead for reward and punishment is coming, people, without doubt. So be certain of its coming. And so turn to your Lord in repentance.

A night porter works the quiet hours at a small hospital. Midnight, one, two, three. Corridors empty, lights low. He makes tea and reads. At twelve minutes past four the emergency doors burst open, and the whole building is awake in a second.

That is the shape of the Hour as its name describes it. Long quiet, then everything at once.

The ayah does not ask us to live in panic through the night. It asks us to remember that it is night, and that the doors will open. Those who are ready when they do are those who never forgot what the quiet was for.
