Ash-Shuraa 42:13

“He has ordained for you of religion what He enjoined upon Noah and that which We have revealed to you, [O Muḥammad], and what We enjoined upon Abraham and Moses and Jesus - to establish the religion and not be divided therein. Difficult for those who associate others with Allāh is that to which you invite them. Allāh chooses for Himself whom He wills and guides to Himself whoever turns back [to Him].”

Essence

Nuh, Ibrahim, Musa, ʿIsa and Muhammad ﷺ carried one charge: keep the religion standing and do not split apart over it.

A reflection

Why the call felt so heavy

"Heavy upon the polytheists is that to which you call them." The verb is kabura. Its root is plain size. The lexicons note how size became weight: a matter kabura ʿalayhi when it was too heavy for him to carry. The commentaries say what weighed so much. The call to worship Allah alone, and to leave every other god.

Why should that be heavy? One classical commentator gives a sharp answer. It was heavy because accepting it meant following a messenger, and their pride would not bend. So the ayah answers at once: Allah chooses for Himself whom He wills. He picks His messengers without regard to lineage, wealth or rank.

Picture a retired headmaster who signs up for an evening class in Arabic. On the first night he discovers the teacher is a former pupil, a girl he once kept in detention. For a week it weighs on him to sit at a small desk and be corrected by her. He nearly stops going. Then one evening she explains a verb so clearly that he forgets who is teaching. He keeps coming back.

The weight he felt was not in the lesson. It was in his ego. That is exactly what the ayah exposes. The message itself, one God, is simple. What made it heavy was receiving it from someone the proud thought beneath them. It also meant giving up gods that flattered their customs.

Some hear "Allah chooses whom He wills" and think it sounds like favouritism. But the choosing is His right as Lord, and it cuts across every human ranking. It humbles the powerful and lifts the overlooked. Nothing is taken from anyone by His choice. Only the illusion that rank decides who is worth hearing.

Ask yourself where truth has felt heavy to you, not because it was wrong, but because of who brought it.
