Ash-Shuraa 42:3

كَذَٰلِكَ يُوحِىٓ إِلَيْكَ وَإِلَى ٱلَّذِينَ مِن قَبْلِكَ ٱللَّهُ ٱلْعَزِيزُ ٱلْحَكِيمُ

“Thus has He revealed to you, [O Muḥammad], and to those before you - Allāh, the Exalted in Might, the Wise.”

Essence

Revelation is the settled way of the Mighty, the Wise, who has always spoken to chosen people, and you hold the latest link.

A reflection

The sender is named last

Read the ayah in its Arabic order and notice where the speaker appears. First comes "thus reveals to you, and to those before you". Only then comes the name: "Allah, the Mighty, the Wise". The verb comes first, then the people who receive, then the sender, at the very end.

One classical reading explains the effect. The fact of revelation is treated as already known. The real point is to say whose habit it is to reveal: Allah's, and specifically Allah as the Mighty and the Wise. The present tense, "He reveals", tells you this is His way, repeated across the ages.

That ordering puts the human ego in its place. The prophets are mentioned, but only as receivers. Even the best of them did not originate the message. He bore it. Aisha described seeing revelation come to the Prophet ﷺ on a bitterly cold day, and his forehead running with sweat when it lifted (al-Bukhari, Muslim). He himself said that sometimes it came like the ringing of a bell, and that this was the hardest on him.

If the most honoured of people sweated under the weight of what he received, what does that say about the rest of us? Our certainty, our cleverness, our sense of being the one who knows: none of it is ours to originate. The most we can do is receive well.

Someone may object that a God who calls Himself "the Mighty, the Wise" sounds like someone who needs to be told he is great. But think of a paramedic arriving at a car crash. She leans in to the trapped driver. My name is Sam, she says; I have done this many times, and I am going to get you out. She is not boasting. She is giving him the one piece of information that lets him stop thrashing and trust the hands on him.

Allah gains nothing from being named. You do. To know that the voice addressing you is mighty means you can stop resisting. To know it is wise means you can stop second-guessing. The names at the end of the ayah are not for His sake. They are the reason it is safe for you to listen.
