Ash-Shuraa 42:2

عٓسٓقٓ

“ʿAyn, Seen, Qāf.[1405]”

Saheeh International

Essence

Three more letters, made of the same sounds we use every day, and placed where no other Ḥā Mīm surah places anything at all.

A reflection

The same bricks, a different building

One view recorded in the commentaries treats all these opening letters as sharing a single meaning. They are, it says, the foundation of clear speech and the base on which all talk is built. Before any sentence is meaningful, it is made of letters like these.

Say them slowly: ʿAyn, Sīn, Qāf. There is nothing exotic in them. Every Arab who heard this surah used these three sounds a hundred times a day. They bargained with them in the market. They insulted each other with them. They courted, mourned and boasted with them. And here the very same sounds stand at the door of revelation.

That is humbling in two directions. First, the Qur'an is not built from some secret alphabet out of reach. Its raw material is the ordinary speech of ordinary people. Second, and more uncomfortably, it shows what those same materials can become. The difference between revelation and gossip is not the letters. It is what they are made to carry.

Think of the predictive text on a phone. It learns from what you type most, and offers you the next word before you have chosen it. A teenager types her friend's name one evening, and the keyboard suggests the next word. She stops. It is not a kind word. The phone has simply been listening to her for months, and it now knows her habits better than she does.

Every one of us has a pattern like that. The letters are neutral. The habits are not. Our tongues build the same structures again and again: complaint, comparison, the small sharp remark, or encouragement, gratitude and remembrance.

So let ʿAyn Sīn Qāf be a quiet audit. These are your letters too. You will use them today. What will you build with them? The surah that follows these sounds speaks of revelation, of angels asking forgiveness, of a Lord who is Forgiving and Merciful. The same alphabet is available to you for the next conversation you have. It can carry something heavy and good, or it can carry the usual. The letters do not decide. You do.
