Ash-Shuraa 42:31

وَمَآ أَنتُم بِمُعْجِزِينَ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ ۖ وَمَا لَكُم مِّن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ مِن وَلِىٍّ وَلَا نَصِيرٍ

“And you will not cause failure [to Allāh][1423] upon the earth. And you have not besides Allāh any protector or helper.”

Essence

No one outruns Allah anywhere on earth, and no one else can shelter you from Him, so the safe direction is towards Him.

A reflection

The runner who cannot get away

A container-ship captain hears of a typhoon forming to the east. He reroutes four hundred miles south to avoid it. Two days later the storm curves, as storms sometimes do, and meets him anyway.

The ayah's key word is muʿjizīn. Its root has an established picture from the race. Aʿjaza is to outrun someone until he cannot catch you. The one left behind, watching the other pass out of reach, is in ʿajz: falling behind, powerless.

So the ayah says: you are not among those who outrun Him on the earth. The commentators fill it in. Wherever you are, flee as you may, you remain in His power and His grip, and His will runs in you.

Human pride often lives in the belief that there is somewhere to go. Another country, a new name, enough money, enough distance. The ayah takes the whole earth as the racecourse and closes it.

This is not the boast of a ruler who wants to be feared. It follows straight from the ayah before, where He pardons much. One commentator reads the two together. You cannot escape what He decrees, and there is no other guardian to show you mercy when it strikes. So His pardon is not a weakness you exploited. It is a gift you could never have taken by force.

The captain did nothing wrong in rerouting. Wise planning is part of trust. But he learned, at sea, the size of his own reach.
