Al-'Ankabut · Makki · ayah 22 of 69

Al-'Ankabut 29:22

“And you will not cause failure [to Allāh] upon the earth or in the heaven. And you have not other than Allāh any protector or any helper.”

Essence

No height or depth puts you beyond Allah's reach, and apart from Him there is no one to shelter you or fight for you.

A reflection

Above it all, and still within reach

Picture a glossy brochure for a new tower. The top-floor flat sits above the clouds on winter mornings. The headline promises what the price is really for: 'Live above it all.' Above the traffic, the noise, the crowds. Above, the advert implies, ordinary life itself.

This ayah quietly closes that sales pitch. 'You cannot escape Him on the earth, nor in the heaven.'

The commentators puzzled over the second half. The people addressed lived on the ground. Why mention the sky? One answer is simple: not even if you were up there. The earth is wide, one commentator says, and the sky is wider still. Were you able to reach it, it would change nothing.

The same commentator offers a second picture. You might go down into the deepest hollows of the earth. You might rise into towers and fortresses reaching the sky. You would still not slip past Him. He links it to another ayah: 'Wherever you are, death will find you, even in towers built high' (4:78). And to another, which dares jinn and humans to pass beyond the regions of the heavens and the earth (55:33).

Height has always flattered the ego. Kings built on hills. Rich men built towers. Today we buy the top floor and call it success. Underneath is an old feeling: the higher I go, the less I am subject to.

The ayah takes that feeling seriously enough to answer it. Go as high as you like. Go as deep as you like. You remain inside His dominion, as close to His decree as the person at street level.

This is not said to win our awe for His sake. Allah needs nothing from us. It is said to bring us back down to the ground we never actually left. The penthouse owner and the street sweeper stand at the same height before Him.
