Ash-Shuraa 42:44

“And he whom Allāh sends astray - for him there is no protector beyond Him. And you will see the wrongdoers, when they see the punishment, saying, "Is there for return [to the former world] any way?"”

Essence

No one can guide the one Allah leaves astray, and wrongdoers who saw no need for a road back will one day beg for one.

A reflection

The author whose brother would not read a page

A writer has sold a million copies of books that help people change their lives. Strangers write to say her words saved them. Her own younger brother, sinking deeper into a ruinous habit, will not read a single page. She has tried everything. One night she admits she cannot move him an inch.

The ayah opens with a sentence that humbles every helper. Wa-man yuḍlili allāhu fa-mā lahu min waliyyin min baʿdih: whoever Allah leaves astray has no protector after Him. One concise commentary explains: no one who can take charge of his guidance after that. Another cites a similar ayah: whoever He leaves astray, you will never find for him a guiding protector (18:17).

One commentator describes the scope of His will in plain terms. What He wills happens and none can turn it back. Whom He guides, none can lead astray; whom He leaves astray, none can guide.

That is a hard truth for human pride. We like to believe our arguments, our love or our programmes can save anyone. Sometimes they are the means He uses. But the guidance itself is not ours to give.

A sceptic may hear arrogance in this, a ruler boasting that everyone's fate is in his hands. The ayah's setting suggests the opposite purpose. It appears among warnings about wrongdoers, to tell the wronged that no one escapes, and to tell helpers where real guidance lies.

For the writer, this was not defeat. It moved her from arguing to praying. She did not stop loving her brother or speaking to him. She stopped believing she was his rescuer. Her task was to keep the door open and ask the One who actually opens hearts. That shift is humility, and it is often where help begins.
