Ash-Shuraa 42:46

“And there will not be for them any allies to aid them other than Allāh. And whoever Allāh sends astray - for him there is no way.”

Essence

Every patron people trusted besides Allah turns out never to have been a protector at all, and without His guidance no road leads anywhere.

A reflection

Below Him, and in the way

A retired senior judge was deferred to for thirty years. Lawyers rose when he entered; officials returned his calls within the hour. Now he sits in a hospital corridor at two in the morning, waiting for news of his wife like everyone else. His title opens nothing here.

The ayah says they had no protectors to help them min dūni allāh, besides Allah. The root of dūn has a vivid established image. It is whatever stands in the space between you and what you reach for. The Arabs said: before you reach the river, there is a company of men. Terrors stand between you and killing the lion. From that came the sense of below, short of the mark, and other than.

So every patron min dūni allāh is, in that picture, something standing between a person and Allah. Something lower, nearer to hand, easier to reach. People lean on it because it is close. But it is below Him, and it falls short.

Pride is attracted to such patrons because they flatter us. Status, connections, followers, institutions: they make a person feel protected. The ayah calmly says they will not help on the Day.

A sceptic may hear this as Allah jealously guarding His position. The surah's own logic answers that. Earlier it said: have they taken protectors besides Him? Allah is the Protector, and He gives life to the dead (42:9). He is not competing for status. He is the only one who can actually do what a protector is for.

The judge in the corridor was not humiliated. He was simply shown, in one long night, what he had always been. He was a man who needed Allah as much as anyone on the plastic chairs beside him.
