Az-Zukhruf 43:3

إِنَّا جَعَلْنَـٰهُ قُرْءَٰنًا عَرَبِيًّا لَّعَلَّكُمْ تَعْقِلُونَ

“Indeed, We have made it an Arabic Qur’ān that you might understand.”

Saheeh International

Essence

The oath is answered not with a threat but a courtesy: the Book was shaped into its hearers' own speech, so understanding was within reach.

A reflection

The oath is answered with a courtesy

After an oath, the listener braces for something heavy. Swearing is how serious things are introduced. Yet the answer to by the clear Book is not a warning. It is a statement of care: We made it an Arabic Quran, so that you may understand.

The commentaries draw out what that care achieved. It was not sent in a foreign tongue, one early explanation says. Otherwise its hearers could have said: we are Arabs, and this is foreign speech whose meanings we cannot grasp. Another commentary adds the purpose plainly. It came in their language and their own patterns of speech, so that their excuses would be cut off entirely. A third links it to a later ayah. Had it been a foreign Quran, they would have said: why are its verses not made clear (41:44)?

There is strategy in that. The surest way to remove an excuse is to remove its ground before it is used.

Picture a referee at a youth tournament. Before kick-off he calls both captains to the centre circle. In plain words he names the three things he will be strict about today: shirt-pulling, dissent, and the backchat at throw-ins. Then he asks each captain to repeat them back. In the second half a player is booked for dissent and protests that nobody told him. His own captain shakes his head.

The referee did not lower his standard. He made sure the standard could be heard. That is what this ayah describes. The demand of the Book is not softened by its being in Arabic. But nobody can stand on the Day and say: the message was in a language I did not know.

For anyone who sets standards for others, the lesson is direct. Say the hard thing in the words of the people who must carry it, then ask them to say it back.
