Az-Zukhruf 43:53
“Then why have there not been placed upon him bracelets of gold or come with him the angels in conjunction?"”
Saheeh International
Essence
Pharaoh asks where Musa's gold bracelets and escort of angels are, measuring a messenger of Allah by a king's badges.
A reflection
Gold, in a surah about gold
Fa-lawlā ulqiya ʿalayhi aswiratun min dhahab: why then have bracelets of gold not been placed on him? The commentaries explain the custom behind it. When they made a man their chief, an early commentator said, they put two bracelets on him. They added a collar of gold, as a sign of his rank.
So Pharaoh's demand was simple. If Musa's Lord really made him a leader, where is the gold?
Now remember where we are in this surah. Its name is the Ornament. Eighteen ayat earlier, Allah spoke of houses of silver, with gold over everything. He would give them to those who reject Him, if it would not lead all people astray. And all of it, He said, is only the enjoyment of the near life (43:33-35).
In other words, gold is precisely the kind of thing Allah hands out without regard to faith. It is the least reliable credential there is. And Pharaoh demanded it as proof of a prophet.
One commentary makes the parallel explicit. Pharaoh assumed that leadership and wealth must come with being a messenger. The Quraysh said the same about the great man of the two towns (43:31). Same demand, different century.
A charity is approached by two men offering to manage its money. One arrives in a luxury car and an expensive suit. The other comes by bus, with careful accounts from his last ten years. The trustees, to their credit, read the accounts.
What do you count as a credential? If it can be bought, or given to anyone, it cannot be the mark of a messenger. Allah had placed something else on Musa: a staff and a shining hand.
