Az-Zukhruf 43:81

قُلْ إِن كَانَ لِلرَّحْمَـٰنِ وَلَدٌ فَأَنَا۠ أَوَّلُ ٱلْعَـٰبِدِينَ

“Say, [O Muḥammad], "If the Most Merciful had a son, then I would be the first of [his] worshippers."[1451]”

Essence

Told of a divine son, the Prophet ﷺ answers with courtesy and certainty: were it so, I would bow first; but it is not.

A reflection

The first to bow, and the reason why

Qul in kāna li-l-Raḥmāni waladun fa-ana awwalu al-ʿābidīn. Say: if the Most Merciful had a son, I would be the first of the worshippers.

One narration-based commentator draws out what the sentence says about the Prophet ﷺ himself. I am a servant among His servants, obedient to all He commands. There is no arrogance in me, no refusal to worship. If such a thing were so, I would worship accordingly. But it is impossible for Him.

That is the posture of majesty seen from below. The most honoured of creation describes himself first as a worshipper. He does not argue from status or pride. He argues as a servant who would follow Allah wherever the truth led.

And the ayah's subject shows majesty from above. Why is a son impossible for Allah? The Quran says it elsewhere: qālū ittakhadha Allāhu waladan, subḥānahu, huwa al-ghaniyy. They said Allah has taken a son. Glory be to Him; He is the Free of need (10:68). A son is something a being needs: an heir, a helper, a continuation. Allah needs none of these. Everything in the heavens and the earth is already His.

That should quiet a certain kind of human pride. We want heirs and helpers because we are limited and temporary. We want our names carried on. That is natural and honourable in us. But projecting it onto Allah is to imagine Him as small as we are.

Does Allah need us to deny that He has a son? No. Subḥānahu: He is far above it whether we say so or not. The correction is for us, so that our worship is aimed at the One who truly is.

Picture a widow in her sixties with no children, who has worried for years about who will keep her late husband's watch, his books, his memory. One evening she reads 10:68 and sits very still. We need heirs because we end. The One who never ends needs no one to carry Him on. And He has been carrying her all along.
