Az-Zukhruf 43:80

“Or do they think that We hear not their secrets and their private conversations? Yes, [We do], and Our messengers [i.e., angels] are with them recording.”

Saheeh International

Essence

No whisper, not even the words you say only to yourself, escapes Allah's hearing, and His messengers beside you are writing it down.

A reflection

The audience we forget

Am yaḥsabūna annā lā nasmaʿu sirrahum wa-najwāhum? Balā. Or do they think We do not hear their secret and their private talk? Yes, We do.

The commentators define the two words carefully. Sirr is what a person says to himself, or to another in an empty place. Najwā is what people say among themselves, quietly, in conference. One adds that sirr here can mean the talk of the soul to itself, the words that never reach the lips. Allah hears that too.

Balā is a single word of answer, and it is enough. Yes. Every whisper. Every inner sentence.

That should humble the ego in a very specific way. Most of us manage our behaviour for the audience we can see. We are careful in public, at work, in front of the family. In private, in the car, in our own heads, we relax the guard.

One linguist quotes an early sage on exactly this. Whoever hides his sins from people, and shows them to the One from whom nothing is hidden, has made Him the least regarded of all who look. That, the sage said, is a mark of hypocrisy.

Picture a man who is courteous to every customer in his shop. He thanks them, smiles, asks after their families. Then, as each one leaves, he mutters a small cruel remark under his breath. Nobody hears. He has done it for years, almost without noticing. One evening, closing up, he wonders who he is really performing for.

The ayah answers him. The One who hears the mutter is greater than every customer put together.

Does Allah need to remind us that He hears? No. He loses nothing if we forget. The reminder is mercy: an invitation to live one life, not two. The same in the shop and under the breath. That is what sincerity, ikhlāṣ, means.
