Ad-Dukhan 44:11

يَغْشَى ٱلنَّاسَ ۖ هَـٰذَا عَذَابٌ أَلِيمٌ

“Covering the people; this is a painful torment.”

Saheeh International

Essence

The smoke comes over people like a cover thrown over everything, and a voice names it plainly, as one names a winter that has arrived.

A reflection

One cover over every house

The verb yaghshā comes from a root the lexicons describe without dispute: covering one thing with another. The ghāshiya of a saddle was its cover. The leather wrapped over a sword's scabbard had the same name. A fainting man was one over whose mind something had come. Even the visitors who crowded a man's door were his ghāshiya, because they came over his threshold all at once.

So the smoke in this ayah is not a cloud that drifts past one district. It is laid over people like a cover, with no gap left at the edges.

Picture a power cut on a winter evening. In one instant a whole street goes dark. The large detached house at the corner, with its security lights and electric gates, is as dark as the bedsit above the chip shop. For a few minutes, everyone on the street stands at their window in the same blackness, seeing their neighbours as shadows for the first time.

The commentaries discuss whom the smoke covers. One explains that if it is the famine smoke that has already passed, it covered the deniers of Makkah. If it is the sign before the Hour, it covers people generally. Either way the word an-nās, the people, does not sort them by rank or wealth. A covering does not ask who you are.

Much of human pride rests on the belief that our arrangements will protect us from what falls on others. Money buys distance from many kinds of trouble. Status buys exemption from many queues. This ayah describes something that comes over everyone at once.

That is sobering, and also strangely levelling. In the dark street, people knock on each other's doors. A shared cover can be the first time a community remembers it is one. The question is whether that remembering comes before the smoke, or only beneath it.
