Essence
The Book gives you eyes for the trail, a road to walk and arms that hold you, and it is offered to everyone.
A reflection
Reading the trail of blood on the stones
Baṣāʾir is the plural of baṣīra, usually translated 'insight'. The lexicons give it a picture from the hunt. A baṣīra was a spot of blood on the ground. The hunter read it to find where his wounded quarry had gone. From that the word came to mean evidence, and then the inner sight that reads the evidence. Other images sit alongside it. A puppy baṣṣara when it first opened its eyes. At dusk people still had baṣar while there was light enough to tell one shape from another. The images are established.
So the Quran calls itself a set of trail-marks, and the eyes to read them.
Picture a vet called out late one evening to find a dog that has been hit by a car and run off. The owners are frantic, searching in the dark. The vet walks slowly across the car park with a torch, crouching every few metres. A spot of blood on the kerb. Another by a drain. A smear on a wheel arch. She follows them under a parked van, and there is the dog, frightened and alive. The owners walked over the same ground. They did not know how to read it.
That is what baṣāʾir do. The world is full of trails, signs left in the sky, the body, the rain, history. The Quran calls these signs out repeatedly in this very surah. But a sign is only useful to someone who can read it. One commentator says the Quran's teachings are placed like insights in the heart. An early scholar quoted in another commentary adds: all of this is in the heart; the hearing and the seeing are in the heart. Then he recited: 'It is not the eyes that are blind, but the hearts within the breasts' (22:46).
The Book does not only point to the trail. It trains the eye.
What trail in your life have you been walking over without reading?
