Al-Qasas 28:43

“And We gave Moses the Scripture, after We had destroyed the former generations, as enlightenment for the people and guidance and mercy that they might be reminded.”

Essence

After the ruins came a Book: lamps for the heart's own eyes, a road, and mercy, so that people might recall what they already knew.

A reflection

After the ruins, a building code

The ayah dates the gift carefully. The Book came after the former generations had been destroyed. The peoples of Nuh, ʿAd, Thamud and Lut, the commentaries list, and the people of Madyan. Then Pharaoh in the sea.

One Companion read a turning point in that timing. He held that after the Torah came down, no nation was wiped out wholesale by a punishment from the sky or the earth. The one exception he named was the town transformed into apes. Whatever the exact scope, the direction is clear. The era of correction by catastrophe gives way to an era of guidance by text.

Another commentary adds a reason. The destruction of those nations had erased the landmarks of earlier revelation. The need for a new, detailed law was felt before the law arrived.

Picture a hillside town that has been flattened by earthquakes three times in a century. Each time, the people rebuild the same houses the same way. After the third collapse, an engineer sits down and writes a building code. Steel in the corners, deep footings, nothing above two storeys. The next earthquake comes, and the houses sway and stand.

The ruins taught the lesson once. The code teaches it every day, before the ground moves.

That is a strategist's insight as well as a spiritual one. The costliest way to learn is by disaster. The wisest institutions turn their disasters into written guidance, so that the next generation learns from a page instead of from rubble.

And there is a mercy in it for every reader since. You do not have to be among the ruins to be taught. You can be taught by the Book that came after them.
