Al-Ahqaf 46:34
“And the Day those who disbelieved are exposed to the Fire [it will be said], "Is this not the truth?" They will say, "Yes, by our Lord." He will say, "Then taste the punishment for what you used to deny."[1489]”

Essence
Shown the Fire and asked if it is real, the deniers swear by their Lord it is, and are told to taste what they denied.
A reflection
The thing that was always real
The question put to them is short: is this not the truth, al-ḥaqq? The lexicons give that root a firm, physical picture. A tightly woven cloth was muḥaqqaq. A door's pivot turning true in its socket was the same idea: a perfect, solid fit. A young camel entering its fourth year was a ḥiqq, because now it could rightly bear a load. What is ḥaqq is firm, real, and puts a claim on you. The image is established.
Two classical commentaries explain the tone of the question. It is a reproach for their mockery of Allah's promise and warning. They had said, like an earlier people, 'We will not be punished' (26:138). The narration-based commentary adds that they used to deny it and refuse to affirm it whenever they were invited.
Picture a man who, for years, joked that his smoke alarm was a drama queen. It went off every time he made toast. One evening he took the battery out to stop the noise. Months later he stands on the pavement in a blanket, watching firefighters bring his kitchen under control. A fire officer asks him, quietly: 'It was a real alarm, wasn't it?'
The alarm had been real all along. Only his attitude had changed what he heard in it.
The Fire is the same. It did not become real on that Day. It was always firm, always true, always fitted to the warnings. Every sound from the Quran about it was a real alarm.
The mercy is that we hear the question now, while the battery is still in. The truth that will be undeniable then can be accepted today, while accepting it still changes everything.
