Al-A'raf · Makki · ayah 172 of 206
Al-A'raf 7:172
“And [mention] when your Lord took from the children of Adam - from their loins - their descendants and made them testify of themselves, [saying to them], "Am I not your Lord?" They said, "Yes, we have testified." [This] - lest you should say on the Day of Resurrection, "Indeed, we were of this unaware."”

Essence
Before you had a name, you were asked one question and gave one answer; the rest of life is whether you remember it.
A reflection
Asked before you had a name
Think of how you are introduced. A keynote speaker stands at the side of a stage while the chair reads her biography: the degrees, the firm, the book, the award. Forty seconds of it, and she walks to the lectern a little taller.
This ayah reaches behind every line of that biography. Alastu bi-rabbikum, Am I not your Lord, is put to people before any of it existed. The word for their offspring, dhurriyya, shares its root with dharr: the tiniest young ants, or a speck with no weight at all. The commentaries preserve reports describing Adam's children drawn out like such specks. Al-Tirmidhi records a hadith he graded ḥasan ṣaḥīḥ: every soul He would create, until the Last Day, fell from Adam's back.
Picture the scale honestly. Every human who will ever live, gathered at once, and not one of them with anything to boast of. No title, no money, no following. Nothing to be proud of except being addressed.
That is where pride loses its footing. Everything the ego leans on arrived later, laid on top of an answer already given. The question did not come to the successful version of you. It came to the speck.
A sceptic may say that a God who asks to be acknowledged sounds insecure. Read the ayah's own reason: lest you say on the Day of Resurrection. The covenant was taken for their sake, so that no one would stand there without a reply. Allah is free of all need (35:15). In a hadith qudsi in Sahih Muslim, the piety of every heart together adds nothing to His dominion. The question does not fill a gap in Him. It fills one in us.
Arrogance in a creature is a false claim to size. Here the claim is simply true, and it was put to us when we were small enough to see it.
