Muhammad 47:5
سَيَهْدِيهِمْ وَيُصْلِحُ بَالَهُمْ
“He will guide them and amend their condition”
Saheeh International
Essence
Three short words promise that the guiding does not stop at death, and that whatever was left weighing on a heart will be set right.
A reflection
Guided, after the last breath?
This ayah follows directly from the last line of 47:4, about those killed in the way of Allah. "He will guide them, and set their state right." A classical objection is recorded in the commentaries, and it is a good one. How can someone already dead be described as guided? Guidance is for the living, who still have choices to make.
The tradition answers in more than one way, and the answers open the ayah rather than close it.
One answer: the guidance is to the road into Paradise. One commentator describes it as guidance "from their graves to the place of their joy, without a pause". Another cites a parallel where the same verb means leading someone along a route (37:23). Guidance here is not instruction. It is escort.
A second answer: the guidance belongs to those who fought and lived. One concise commentary says the ayah gathers the living and the slain together, with the slain named for both.
A third: the future tense is a promise about what Allah does with such people before they are killed. He keeps them guided through their lives, so that they reach that end at all.
Picture a patient being wheeled from a ward to the operating theatre and then to recovery. At each stage a porter or nurse hands the trolley to the next with a word. At no point is the patient left alone in a corridor. Whatever the patient knows or does not know, someone has the trolley.
That is the comfort here. Guidance does not end where human sight ends. For those who gave themselves to Allah, there is no corridor without a hand on the rail.
