Muhammad 47:6

وَيُدْخِلُهُمُ ٱلْجَنَّةَ عَرَّفَهَا لَهُمْ

“And admit them to Paradise, which He has made known to them.”

Essence

Paradise is no strange country to those who enter it: He has already made it known, so they walk in as if coming home.

A reflection

Better at finding that home than this one

The last two words of this ayah are ʿarrafahā lahum: He has made it known to them. The commentaries give that phrase several meanings. The most widely held is also the most tender.

They will know their places in Paradise without asking anyone. One early teacher said they find their houses and dwellings as if they had lived there since they were created. Two commentators reach for the same everyday picture. It is like a crowd leaving the Friday prayer, each person dispersing to their own home without a second thought.

Sahih al-Bukhari records the Prophet ﷺ saying this directly. The believers are cleansed and admitted. Then each is better guided to his dwelling in Paradise than he was to his home in this world. He swore to it by the One in whose hand his soul is.

Think about what that means. The home you know best now, the one you could find in the dark, is less familiar than a place you have never seen. The knowledge is not learned. It is given.

Picture a woman adopted as an infant from a village abroad. At thirty she goes back for the first time. She cannot remember anything about the place. Yet at the end of one lane she stops at a doorway with a low arch and starts to cry. Her birth mother lived there. Something in her knew the shape of it.

That is a faint human echo of what is promised. Paradise will not feel like arriving at a hotel. It will feel like walking through your own door.
