Your faith is overflow from a treasury that needs nothing, given in pure kindness by One who knows exactly where it belongs.
A reflection
Overflow from a treasury that needs nothing
In a wet spring, a reservoir high in the hills fills to the brim and spills over the dam. To the reservoir, the overflow is nothing: water it could not hold anyway. To the valley below, it is the whole year's harvest.
The ayah describes the love of faith, placed in believers' hearts in the verse before, with two words. Faḍlan mina Allāh wa-niʿmah: a favour from Allah and a blessing. One commentator explains why both are needed.
Faḍl, he says, points to Allah's side. The root means increase, what goes beyond the measure. It is the good that is with Him, which He has no need of. One lexicon adds that any gift the giver was not bound to give is called faḍl. Niʿma points to our side. It is what reaches the servant and meets a real need. What is abundance from the Giver's side is survival on the receiver's.
The lexicons add a telling detail about niʿma. A benefit done for the giver's own gain is not a niʿma at all. A sweet laced with poison looks like a gift, and is not one. A true blessing is given wholly for the receiver's good.
Put those together and the ego has nothing left to claim. Allah gains nothing from giving faith. It is not a transaction, not an investment, not a bid for anyone's loyalty. It is overflow from a treasury that lacks nothing, given purely for the one who receives it.
The believer who reads this ayah after the last one is being told something humbling. The most precious thing you own did not come from your effort. Nor did it come from a Giver who needed you. It came from His surplus and His kindness together. The right response is not pride, but the wonder of the valley below the dam.
