Al-Ma'idah 5:114
“Said Jesus, the son of Mary, "O Allāh, our Lord, send down to us a table [spread with food] from the heaven to be for us a festival for the first of us and the last of us and a sign from You. And provide for us, and You are the best of providers."”

Essence
Isa takes his disciples' request and lifts it, putting a festival and a sign first, the meal last, and ending on the best of providers.
A reflection
The provider who is provided for
A man in his late fifties is made redundant after thirty years. He tells his brother on the phone that night: I have always been the provider. Now I don't know who I am.
It is one of the proudest words a person can carry. Provider. It sits close to the centre of the ego, especially for those who have worked hard to earn it. We feed children, pay rent, keep a household afloat. And slowly we start to believe the bread comes from us.
Isa's prayer ends with a correction no one asked him for. And provide for us, he says, and then: You are the best of providers. A prophet, raised above his people by miracles, asks for food like any of them. And he names Allah as the true Provider of every provider, himself included.
The Quran makes the point elsewhere in this very surah. The Messiah, son of Maryam, was only a messenger, and his mother was truthful. They both used to eat food (5:75). The one who asks to be fed is a creature. The One who feeds is not.
One commentary notices the movement of the prayer. Isa names his need, provide for us, and does not stop there. He rises at once from the provision to the Provider. That rise is where the ego is humbled. Every salary, every harvest, every meal on a table passes through our hands. None of it starts there.
Does Allah need to be called the best of providers? He needs nothing from anyone. The praise is for the one who says it. It lifts his eyes from the bread to the Giver. That is the only place a provider can stand without being crushed when the bread stops.
The redundant man is not less than he was. He was always a channel. The water still has its Source.
