Qaf 50:9
“And We have sent down blessed rain from the sky and made grow thereby gardens and grain from the harvest”
Saheeh International
Essence
Every orchard and every sack of grain begins with water He sends down, water that carries more good than its amount can explain.
A reflection
The rosette on the prize marrow
At a county agricultural show, a grower stands beside his marrow for the photographer. It is the size of a small child. A red rosette hangs from it, and the caption in the local paper reads 'his best yet'. Fair enough. He chose the seed, built the bed and watered it through August.
But look at who speaks in this ayah. Wa-nazzalnā mina al-samāʾi māʾan mubārakan: and We sent down from the sky blessed water. Fa-anbatnā bihi: and We brought forth by it. Two verbs, both signed 'We'. The gardens and the harvested grain are named only after the One who sent the water and made it grow.
The ego quietly rewrites that order. We say 'my harvest', 'my yield', 'my business'. The rain becomes a background condition and we become the cause. Strip away the water, and the grower has a heap of dry soil and a packet of seeds. Every rosette ever awarded was pinned to something that first needed a cloud.
Someone might ask why Allah keeps reminding people that He sends the rain. Does He need the credit? One classical commentator gives a sharper answer. Naming Himself as the Giver shows how ugly it is to deny Him while eating His provision. The reminder protects us from a quiet ingratitude. It adds nothing to Him. He is the Free of all need, the Praiseworthy (35:15).
The humbling truth is gentle. Your skill is real, and so is your effort. They are a second link in a chain whose first link is in the sky. Take the photograph, by all means. Then, before you accept the rosette in your heart, thank the One who sent the rain.
