Qaf 50:8
تَبْصِرَةً وَذِكْرَىٰ لِكُلِّ عَبْدٍ مُّنِيبٍ
“Giving insight and a reminder for every servant who turns [to Allāh].”
Saheeh International
Essence
The sky and the earth were made to open eyes and jog memories, but only the one who keeps turning back to Allah reads them.
A reflection
The leaflet and the alarm
Open a box of new tablets and you find two different helps. There is the folded leaflet that explains what the medicine is and how it works. And there is the pill organiser on the kitchen shelf, with an alarm that rings at eight every morning. The leaflet cures not knowing. The alarm cures forgetting. You need both, because many people know exactly what to take and still forget.
The ayah names two purposes for everything just described: the seamless sky, the spread earth, the anchored mountains, the bright growth. Tabṣiratan wa-dhikrā: as insight and as a reminder.
One classical commentator draws a fine line between them. Some signs are constant, set up permanently in front of the mind, like the sky whose adornment never changes. Those give tabṣira, sight. Other signs renew themselves, like the earth putting on its green each year. Those give dhikrā, a reminder at the moment you were starting to forget. He suggests the sky leans to the first and the earth to the second, while both carry something of each.
This is a merciful design. Allah does not only explain once and leave us to our memories. He built a world that rings the alarm every spring. Every first blossom on a bare branch is a reminder arriving on schedule.
Most of us are not short of information about Allah. We know He made us, sees us and will gather us. Our problem is that we forget it by Tuesday. The ayah promises a creation that keeps reminding, as long as we keep noticing.
