Adh-Dhariyat 51:11

ٱلَّذِينَ هُمْ فِى غَمْرَةٍ سَاهُونَ

“Who are within a flood [of confusion] and heedless.”

Saheeh International

Essence

The guessers are people under a flood, water closed over their heads, drifting so smoothly in heedlessness that they no longer feel the road.

A reflection

Water over your head

A swimmer misjudges a river in spring. The current takes her, and for a few seconds the water closes over her head. Underneath, everything changes. She cannot see the bank. She cannot tell which way is up. The world she knew a moment ago is still there, a metre away, and completely invisible.

The ayah's word is ghamra. The commentaries and lexicons give its picture plainly. Ghamr is deep water that covers whoever enters it; a river described as ghamr closes over the one who wades in. The ghamarāt of death are its pangs closing over a person. The picture is established.

One commentary explains the ayah as a vast ignorance that covers them and surrounds them the way deep water surrounds whatever is in it. Another defines the ghamra as whatever has covered the heart.

Then a writer on the heart widens the list in a way that should make every reader pause. The ghamarāt, he says, are whatever covers the heart: ignorance, desire, intoxication, heedlessness, love, hatred, fear, or grief.

That list includes things we would never call evil. Love can close over a heart until nothing else is visible. So can grief, or fear, or a consuming project. The ayah's people are under a flood of denial. But every person knows the shape of their trouble. You are so submerged in one thing that the bank can no longer be seen: Allah, the Hereafter, life's real direction.

The swimmer's only hope is to stop thrashing and look for the light above her. The surface is always where the light is.

Ask yourself honestly today: what is over my head right now? Then do one thing that lifts your face towards the light: a prayer said slowly, a page of Quran, a moment of silence.
