At-Tur 52:12

ٱلَّذِينَ هُمْ فِى خَوْضٍ يَلْعَبُونَ

“Who are in [empty] discourse amusing themselves.”

Saheeh International

Essence

The deniers spent their lives stirring empty talk and moving without aim, like a boat the sea plays with for a month, going everywhere and arriving nowhere.

A reflection

A boat the sea plays with

A small fishing boat loses its engine far out at sea. For weeks the crew drift. The currents carry them in long, slow loops. When they are finally found, someone works out that they have travelled hundreds of miles. They are almost exactly where they started.

The first hearers had a picture very close to that in the word laʿib, play. One lexicon traces it to luʿāb, the spittle that runs from a small child's mouth: something in motion that is going nowhere in particular. From there, a man is said to laʿiba when his action has no sound aim behind it. Another lexicon says the whole word turns on moving along without going straight. And it records a vivid use. The waves, it was said, played with a ship for a month, never carrying it where it meant to go. That picture is established.

So the ayah describes the deniers as yalʿabūn: playing. Not necessarily laughing or idle. Moving, perhaps constantly, but without a destination. One commentary says they are playing in this world, heedless of where they are going.

This is a sobering mirror for a busy age. Many of us are never still. Diaries full, phones buzzing, weekends booked. We cover enormous distances. Yet at the end of a year, or a decade, it is hard to say where we have arrived. The motion was real. The direction was missing.

The Quran's alternative is not inactivity. It is aim. A life with a destination can be busy or quiet, but every loop of it is carrying it somewhere.

At the end of today, ask one question of your hours: where did they carry me? If the honest answer is nowhere, choose one thing for tomorrow that points towards Allah, and let it set the course.
